darcy from art and sole is the gracious hostess of the artful readers' club each month of 2013. members read a book, write a review and then create a piece of artwork inspired by the book.
for february, i read the book soul to soul by gary zukav. my aunt gave me her copy and I thought it would be a good read over the valentine's day season.
at first, i was not impressed. it seemed like a series of "feel good" shorts, clichés at best. but then i started over and used the book as a journal, writing at the end of each section, underlining and boxing in words that were meaningful to me, taking notes in the margins. reading it became personal and transformative for me. I ended up feeling like this was time well-spent and would recommend this book to anyone who wanted to experience it in a "workshop" kind of way, like i did.
i created the piece above using one of my favorite quotes from the book. i have been experimenting with lettering styles and this seemed like a good fit for that practice. i used watercolor paper, a sharpie marker and watercolor paints.

Nice to know that interacting with your book made it a worthwhile read. I think sometimes we are not brave enough to put marks onto a book page, I think it helps to do this sometimes. I have even been known to get a highlighter pen out! Great piece of art too. Love the quote you have used. Ü
ReplyDeleteOh..so sweet and SOOO true...lovely art...it would make a great sticker!
ReplyDeleteI enjoyed the way you embraced this book the second time around. Your art is so poetic and fits nicely with the communications theme of the book, too.
ReplyDeleteI can see your Art-piece going all over Facebook being shared and shared between friends. It's so cool! ♥
ReplyDeleteGlad you found a way to make your book work! I used to scribble all over my schoolbooks, until I found out I had to pay for it when I turned them in at the end of the year... Since then I don't dare anymore but always have a piece of scrap paper nearby to make notes! :)
Sounds like a great way to approach the book, its not often that reading a book is interactive, i guess we talk to other ppl about the book, but maybe we don't impart all our thoughts fully.. by making notes in the books itself you really capture your thoughts and feelings of that moment. I suppose it is tabboo to write in a book, it shouldn't be because i think this is a great way to fully use the book. Lovely doodled lettering.
ReplyDeleteI'm reading The 19th Wife, and it's really interesting. I would not have put those colors together, but they're really striking!

Making the book into a workshop sounds like a good way of living the experience. Love the heart and the quote.

That's just the kind of book that needs processing (journaling, highlighting, re-reading passages)...workshop style...There are so many tidbits of wisdom in his books...love your lettering art with a great quote from Zukav.
ReplyDeleteI love that you didn't give up on the book but used it in a different way, resulting in a positive review and some beautiful artwork!
ReplyDeleteGreat way to use the book, writing notes etc. I come from a generation where that was a big no-no but now (having altered a few myself) Why Not?

ReplyDeleteThis is a lovely piece of lettering, Laurie. And I love hearing how you used the book as a personal, transformative experience. You turned it into a journal of the very best kind!
ReplyDeleteI really love the way you used this book. I am one of those people who is scared to write or draw in books but it sounds like a real worthwhile exercise for you.
